A Sweet Visit from Anitah – A Future Midwife with a Big Heart

ree

Yesterday, we had the sweetest visit from Anitah, our 4th university student — and she’s almost there! On the 6th, she begins her final semester. One more semester, and Anitah won’t just have a job… she’ll have a profession. One that gives her the ability to support her family, create a bright future, and bring essential healthcare to the women in her community.

During her visit, Anitah graciously shared her knowledge with our Elderly Project staff, teaching them basic first aid and the importance of being a responsive first aider. She covered the essentials — from the first rules of first aid to wound care. She even taught the Heimlich maneuver for both adults and infants.

The training was full of meaningful discussion, great questions, and practical, hands-on learning. Watching her teach was a powerful reminder of how education transforms not just the student, but entire communities.

Anitah’s Story: From Tragedy to Purpose

Anitah’s journey has been anything but easy. She is the firstborn of nine children. When Anitah was just 14, tragedy struck: her mother died during childbirth with her ninth child.

This painful loss revealed a heartbreaking reality in rural Uganda:

  • Many women do not attend prenatal care visits.

  • Most available medical professionals are men, and cultural barriers make expectant mothers feel too shy or unsafe to seek their care.

  • Some women even fear that their visits could lead to inappropriate treatment, creating deep mistrust.

These fears, combined with a lack of accessible, culturally sensitive care, lead to countless preventable deaths during pregnancy and childbirth.

Her Dream: Changing Maternal Healthcare

Anitah’s personal loss gave her a purpose. She dreams of becoming a midwife.

Her goal is simple yet profound:

  • To ensure expectant mothers feel safe and respected.

  • To provide compassionate, professional care.

  • To prevent other families from experiencing the pain of losing a mother during childbirth.

Her vision is to change the story of maternal care in her village and beyond — to create a healthcare environment where no woman feels too shy, too afraid, or too unsafe to seek help.

The Power of Education — And Your Support

This dream would not be possible without the incredible generosity of our donors. Because of you, Anitah was able to enroll in school, stay the course through the hardest years, and now stand just one semester away from graduation.

When she graduates, Anitah won’t just be lifting herself out of poverty — she’ll be changing lives. She’ll be bringing professional medical care to a community that desperately needs it.

Education transforms everything. And Anitah is living proof.
