Our Women
THEIR STORY
We currently work with about a dozen women in the Macary area, providing them with a sense of community as well as encouragement and spiritual/emotional support.
In addition, we hold an annual women’s conference each year, and we have set up a job training program that provides the women with the resources and skills they need to be able to support their families.
We recently completed our third workshop, where we taught the women how to sew pillowcase dresses and how to make jewelry from repurposed materials.
The women are excitedly pursuing this new way of earning money for their families, and it is priceless to see the hope and joy on their faces as they work.
Bethany supports her two children and often needs to borrow money in order to send them to school. She recently saved enough money to pay off her debts; however, her daughter became ill and needed to go to the hospital, so Bethany found herself in debt once again. She and her children live in her mother’s house, and Bethany sometimes must choose between sending her children to school and feeding them. Bethany hopes that selling her dresses and jewelry will enable her to buy food for her children.
Luciana has one daughter, and she lives with her sister Guerline and her children. Together, the two sisters try to earn enough money to feed their children and send them to school. They work for the school as cooks, but because of the school’s financial problems, they often go several months without getting paid. Luciana has a big heart and volunteered as a cook for The Angel Projects’ Vacation Bible School this past summer. Luciana and her sister hope that making dresses and jewelry with The Angel Projects will help them feed their children.
Nenet has three children, and she also cares for her niece. Nenet used to rely on the help of her mother, but she recently passed away, so now Nenet must feed the four children and send them to school all on her own. Nenet loves to sew, and she is very excited about the sewing project as well as the jewelry-making. She hopes that she will earn the money she needs to support her children.
Daline lives with her daughter, Luca, and her younger sister, Dania. She must send her little girl to school and provide food for her family. She started making dresses and jewelry with The Angel Projects to earn much-needed grocery money.
Dania is a junior in high school and lives with her older sister, Daline. Her mother recently passed away, and now Dania must pay for her own education. She just graduated from cooking school, and she began making dresses and jewelry with The Angel Projects because she wants to be able to finish high schoo
Guerline has three children, and she lives with her sister Luciana and her niece. Together, the two sisters try to earn enough money to feed their children and send them to school. Edna is in high school and lives with her mother and brother. Her father recently left the family to move to Port-au-Prince, and he provides no support for his children. Edna must help her mother earn enough money to send her to school and to pay for the family’s groceries. She hopes that by selling her dresses she can continue her education and pursue a brighter future.
Chrismene supports her five children by purchasing secondhand clothing, mending it, and then selling it for a small profit. She is very motivated and would love to own her own business, but she is unable to read and write. Chrismene and her children live in a house that is only partially completed; after sending her children to school and buying food for them, Chrismene doesn’t have enough money left over to finish the building of her house. Chrismene hopes that by selling dresses and jewelry she will be able to bring in enough extra money to complete her home.
Acean has five children to support. She is married, but the relationship is strained, and her husband is unreliable in supporting his family. To feed her children, Acean buys secondhand clothing, washes it and mends it, and then sells it for a small profit. Acean has a deep faith and is the worship leader at her church. She joined the women’s ministry at The Angel Projects because she hopes that making and selling jewelry will enable her to both feed her children and send them to school.
Clermise is a warm and loving woman; she has no children of her own, but she currently cares for her godson, Flaunderson, whose mother is living and working in the Dominican Republic. Clermise must also care for and support her aging parents. She has a garden where she grows bananas to sell, but it is difficult to feed four people on this income alone. Clermise joined our women’s ministry because she hopes to earn enough money to buy food for her family.
Sonya is a junior in high school. She lost her father two years ago, and now she lives with her mom, sister, and nephew. Sonya and her mother care for the nephew while Sonya’s sister looks for work. Sonya loves working with kids, and she is the kids’ choir director at the church planted by The Angel Projects. Sonya just graduated from cooking school, and she hopes that by selling her jewelry she will be able to complete high school as well.
Venente is a single mother of four. She works as a cook at the local school, but because of the school’s financial problems, she often goes several months without being paid. Venente decided to begin working with The Angel Projects in order to supplement her income and be able to feed and educate her children
